At the end of 2020, Mackenzie Scott made news by giving more than $4 billion to 400 nonprofits across the country, three of which are here in Greenville County. Join us to hear from two of those leaders – Catriona Carlisle with Meals on Wheels and Tammie Hoy Hawkins with CommunityWorks Carolina – about receiving the news of their gifts and what it means for their organizations. We’ll use this as a jumping off point to discuss what makes a gift – other than its size – transformational for a nonprofit. Jerry Blassingame with Soteria CDC will discuss how greater philanthropic support has ramped up his impact. Featuring special guest, Meghan Duffy, Executive Vice President of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations.

Several of you have come to GPP and NPA saying, “My board needs help!” Challenges include:

• Board members getting very comfortable with zooming and multitasking while doing so – how do we pull them back in post-COVID?
• Board attendance slipping because members are busy with their own COVID stresses at home and work
• Boards failing on responsibilities like evaluating the executive director
• How to follow through on non-COVID aspirations for boards, like attendance policies, self-evaluation, getting them to read materials

Our organizations are in a time of transition – moving from virtual to in-person, moving from crisis to recovery, looking at mission expansion or mission re-alignment. Now is a great time to look at how to make this transition in a way that positions our board for success. Many of your boards take the summer off, so this seemed like a great time to prepare to equip you and your boards for the latter part of 2021 and beyond.

Our last in person GPP meeting in January 2020 looked at “payday lending” in South Carolina and early plans to put an end to predatory interest rates. Please join us for an update on the tremendous progress that a new coalition has made since that time and what’s next in terms of policy change.

2020 required boards to pivot to online meetings, strained participation with members’ own busy schedules, and the enormous challenges that nonprofits were facing. What lessons and adjustments can we take into the coming years? And what best practices can take boards from good to great?

Building opportunities for ALL Greenville County residents also means making sure every voice can be heard. Many community organizations are actively seeking to create equitable spaces to better serve our community members. This action must include creating space for those that are not predominantly English speaking.

Creating multi-lingual spaces where everyone can communicate, understand, and be understood in the language in which they prefer is part of language justice. Language justice is a key component to building inclusive, equitable and sustainable communities. As the world continues to evolve, today’s non-profit and philanthropic organizations have tools at their disposal to implement strategies and practices that promote language equity. This session will include practical tips on doing your work with language justice in mind.
